Three kinds of coverage

Most people want to make sure their family isn't left with bills. Here's how the three main types differ.

Term life

Covers you for a set number of years, like 10 or 20.

Good for: Paying off a mortgage or replacing income while others depend on you.

Whole life

Meant to last your whole life, as long as premiums are paid. Builds cash value over time.

Good for: Leaving something for children or grandchildren.

Final expense

A smaller whole life policy. Usually health questions, no medical exam.

Good for: Funeral costs and final bills, so family isn't left with them.

Applying after 65

Many people in their 60s and 70s can still apply. Applications usually ask health questions, and each company makes its own decision.

I can't promise the outcome, but I'll explain every step and compare options from the companies I represent.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Is there a waiting period? Some final expense policies pay only part of the benefit in the first two years.
  • Can my premium go up? Ask whether the price is locked in.
  • Does the coverage ever end? Term policies stop after a set number of years.
  • Is the company licensed in North Carolina?

In North Carolina you get at least 10 days to look over a new policy and return it for a full refund (20 days if it replaces another policy).
